Upper State Independent Awards 2009 / Independents’ Day
Molly English-Bowers, Syracuse New Times
11-04-2009

In an era of Starbucks, Wal-Mart and FYE, it’s refreshing when someone embraces and celebrates the independents in our midst. Kendric Bedell, himself an independent artist who moved to Syracuse four years ago, is once again producing the Upper State Independent Awards, Saturday, Nov. 7, 7 p.m. at Corcoran High School, 919 Glenwood Ave. This is the third year for the event.

“I’m an independent musician so I know we need a platform like this,” Bedell says. “There are so many talented people out there who aren’t being recognized. People try to get a record deal on their own, some get discouraged and others keep going. I realized that in order to do anything you have to do it yourself. That’s why I pay tribute to independent artists.”

Those who come to the show can expect to see winners announced in 35 categories that include all musical genres, poet, model, designer, television shows, online radio, dancer / choreographer, photographer and comedian. Winners will be decided from an online ballot that these artists could print and distribute to friends, family and at shows. “We’re getting more and more balloting each year,” says Bedell, who relocated here from Washington, D.C., with his wife Sheridonna Bedell, who is hosting the show.

“My sister introduced me to Syracuse,” he says. “She was here first and saw the opportunities that are here to raise a family. The homes are cheaper than in D.C. as well. If we didn’t come here then the show probably would never have happened.”

The USIAs will feature numerous performances by such artists as Carbone, Up North Movement, Brother Maniac and the DMV All-Stars, Nyesh McGriff, and others.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students, and $5 for children younger than 10, and can be purchased at the Web site, www.usiawards.com. For more information, call Bedell at 422-1406.

This year we are working to obtain an international artist to perform and endorse the award show.

The USI Awards committee’s mission is to raise awareness about the talented individuals that surround us. Our way of promoting this year is our television shows, special appearances on other TV shows, radio commercials radio interviews, word of mouth, bus wraps, CDs from the first and second award show, billboards, t-shirts, brochures, fliers, and websites. We are diverse in our awards selections, as well as engaging in more entertainment elements for the community.

The Upper State Independent Awards Show is sponsored by businesses and organizations from the Syracuse area. About half of the audience is from Syracuse. The musicians, volunteers, and a few sponsors are from the regional area. In conclusion, the Upper State Independent Awards Show is a wonderful environment to network with independent talented professional business individuals. You also get to enjoy genres of music and an eye-catching fun fashion show. If you would like to be a sponsor email us. You don’t want to miss it! Hope to see you there!
